What is VCT Flooring?
Vinyl Composition Tile (VCT) is a dense, hard-wearing commercial flooring product made from natural limestone, vinyl resins, and pigments. Unlike luxury vinyl tile (LVT), VCT is through-coloured from top to bottom โ the colour and pattern run through the entire tile, not just a surface layer. This makes it genuinely refinishable: over time, scratches and dullness can be buffed out, a fresh coat of floor polish applied, and the floor restored to like-new condition without replacement.
Properly maintained VCT lasts 20โ30 years or more in demanding commercial environments. It's one of the lowest total-cost-of-ownership flooring options available โ and it's been proving that for over 60 years in facilities across North America.

Where Armstrong VCT Is Commonly Specified
VCT is engineered for the commercial environments that need flooring to perform year after year. Armstrong Excelon is the go-to choice for:
Handles thousands of students daily. Supports school colour accents, wayfinding patterns, and coloured border inlays. Long lifespan aligns with school renovation cycles.
Hospitals, clinics, and long-term care homes rely on VCT under heavy rolling loads โ beds, carts, and equipment. Smooth surface is easy to disinfect and maintain.
Proven in grocery, pharmacy, and big-box retail. Handles shopping carts and non-stop foot traffic across large floor plates at a budget-friendly installed cost.
Corridors, break rooms, stockrooms, back-of-house, and multi-tenant lobbies. Pairs well with carpet tile in open-plan office environments.
Courthouses, libraries, municipal offices, and community centres regularly specify Armstrong VCT for proven durability, low lifecycle cost, and green building compliance.
Loading docks, stockrooms, food prep areas, and light manufacturing floors where heavy rolling load resistance and easy cleanability are essential.
Why VCT Is Still the Smart Commercial Flooring Choice
With LVT and other resilient products competing for attention, VCT continues to dominate large commercial projects โ and for good reason:
- Lowest material cost among durable commercial hard flooring options โ ideal for large floor plates on commercial budgets
- Refinishable, not replaceable โ strip and rewax renews the floor instead of replacing it; individual damaged tiles can be swapped without redoing the whole floor
- Decades of proven performance โ properly maintained VCT installed in the 1990s is still performing in facilities today
- Design flexibility โ mix colours for checkerboard patterns, borders, department colour coding, or school spirit designs across 100+ colour options
- Fast, straightforward installation โ adhesive-down method keeps labour costs and project timelines down
- LEED eligible โ EPD, recycled content, and FloorScore certification support green building credits on institutional projects
VCT Maintenance: What to Expect
VCT requires a regular maintenance program โ this is what makes it last. Here's the basic cycle:
- Daily โ dust mop or sweep to remove grit and debris (the leading cause of surface scratches)
- Weekly โ damp mop with a neutral pH cleaner, followed by a clean water rinse
- Every 3โ6 months โ recoat with floor polish as the finish wears, depending on traffic volume
- Annually or as needed โ full strip & refinish using a floor stripper and scrubber, then fresh polish coats to restore a like-new appearance
Armstrong provides detailed VCT Maintenance Recommendations โ we can include this documentation with your order.
Frequently Asked Questions โ VCT Flooring
How much does VCT flooring cost in Ontario?
VCT is one of the most budget-friendly commercial flooring materials available. Material cost is low per square foot, with total installed cost depending on project size and substrate condition. Contact us for a quote specific to your project.
Should I use VCT or LVT for my commercial space?
VCT is the better choice for large commercial projects where a professional maintenance program is in place โ schools, healthcare, retail big-box, and government buildings. LVT is worth considering when waxing isn't practical, or where a wood or stone look is required. Our team can help you choose the right product for your application and budget.
How many tiles are in a box?
Standard Armstrong Excelon 12"ร12" VCT ships 45 tiles per carton, covering 45 square feet. Contact us for current stock levels and pricing on the colours you need.
Does Armstrong VCT qualify for LEED credits?
Yes. Armstrong Excelon Imperial Texture carries an EPD, FloorScore certification, and recycled content โ all supporting LEED v4 Material & Resources and Low-Emitting Materials credits. We can provide the required documentation.
Can VCT be installed over existing flooring?
VCT requires a smooth, flat substrate. It can often be installed over properly prepared concrete or over embossed levelling compound applied over existing resilient flooring. Our team can advise on substrate requirements for your specific project.
Is VCT suitable for use below grade?
Yes โ Armstrong Excelon VCT with the S-525 adhesive is rated for on-, above-, and below-grade applications, making it suitable for basement-level commercial spaces and slab-on-grade construction.
